Overheard at the dealership

Parts guy on phone : "No, we'd have to order the fuel filter... $54"

Customer : -inaudible-

Parts guy: "We have the struts in stock. They're $1100 each."

Customer : -audible but not intelligible-

Me: What car was that for?

Parts guy: W220 chassis.

Me: OUCH!!!! I'll keep my 126, thanks very much!!

Well everyone knows that dealer prices are inflated. The fuel filter could probably be had for 20 dollars and well I dont know about the struts. Them dealers love to charge list price for everything.

I expect the parts and service departments are what are keeping most dealerships afloat lately.

Tinypanzer, I see you watch "Auto Trader". Great show!

tinypanzer 03-24-2009 07:12 PM

I do? It is?

I called the steal-ur-shirt today to get the prive for a steering dampener...

$350.

Talked to Napa... Under $40.

S-Class suspensions . . . bleeding edge

You mean the shock on the steering? $350??!?! :dizzy2: I got mine online for $26!! And its the real deal made in Germany part!

Our local MB stealership...

announced that they are extending their service hours to full days, from partial days, on Saturdays. I am sure they are not doing to satisfy the consumer...

Overheard at the dealership while I was picking up some parts: R-Class referred to as an "Alabama trash can."

The car in question was on the lift with the engine, tranny, exhaust, and most of the drive line out of it. The tech told me it was a warranty job to replace a seal. Anyone know which seal that might be?

I was thinking the same thing.

Must be a mistake. List price is less than $50 as of five minutes ago.

G500? What's the p/n? I called up the dealer and they said $350.

TX76513 03-25-2009 02:18 PM

Sometimes you just have to pay - was at dealership today to get 10 panel clips for an ML $2.00 each (007 988 99 78)

Its a 2002 G500. If it seriously is $50, I will give your dealership a call.

So Rick Wagoner could have a job running the Alabama show.

BenzBob 03-26-2009 09:36 AM

Interesting comment since drivetrain is not made in Alabama and is pretty much the same as used in all other 4MATICS no matter where they are assembled.

I guess I would take the Mercedes technicians comment with a "grain of salt" and would never want this one to work on my car.

Maybe he should find employment elsewhere.

TX76513 03-26-2009 09:44 AM

Un scientific observation. At the dealer shop ML's are 5 to 1 over sedans. I don't know what the sales ratio's are but it sure is obvious.

Ahhh, a G-Wagen. I think NAPA quoted you on the wrong part. The part number is A463-463-00-32, list price is $210.

I took it in there and had them measure it, and we found an aftermarket part that fit the application.

The OEM ones seem to like to wear out quickly, so I wanted to try something else.

professor 03-26-2009 09:56 PM

I would keep the W126 because it's an easier car to work on and parts are still readily available at reasonable prices. Heck, I can get a completely rebuilt engine for under $10K and have a car that would outlast a newer car at the time of the swap.
