Front Struts/190E: Are these rebuildable?

I finally found the mystery knocking in my front end that has been bugging me for a couple of months. I let it get worse and found out that it was a torn upper strut mount. While I'm in there, I might as well replace the struts as they look a little oily around the strut housing.

Why isnt just the strut 'shock cartridge' available? It seems unnecessary to have to buy the whole assembly. Is that cap on the stru housing threaded? I have a Bilstein tool to get off the porsche struts as
My Porsche 944's have 'rebuildable struts' (unlike the 911's) where you can just swap out the shock.

Any thoughts?

They are "sealed" units! MB had them designed that way. Both the Sachs/ Boge & Bilstein struts are that way!
Only way is to get a complete strut.

Thanks / Already went to Fastlane!

Its a shame that they are sealed.
Already ordered a pair from Fatlane first thing this morning. I didnt notice but,
Does Fastlane charge a core charge?

Nope. I hope you're not going to send them your old struts.

No, I wasnt going to send the old ones in, but it does seem like a waste of a good core. Especially, in light of today's recycling efforts and environmental concerns.

Oh well, off to the land fill with 'em.

Herr Leber,

Yep, the stock struts I have are still good so I've got them lying by the side of the garage. Hard to throw away something that still works. BTW, I hope you got the Bilsteins. ;)

Bilstein Fan

Yeah, Bilsteins are virtually indestructable. I am a big fan of 'em. I have been using them in my various Porsches for over a decade.:D
