1993 500e

Hello guys,
Find these 2 1993 500E on eBay and autotrader.com. One is located in Brooklyn, New York, the other one is in west LA. What do you think about those cars? Thank you.

The green one looks very well taken care of (you might ask a member here to take it for a test drive for you for a deeper opinion)

The black one looks very clean as well, but I'm personally not fond of the wheel design/ wood steering wheel/ wood shifter.

If you are seriously considering these vehicles, it would be wise to obtain car fax, dealer records, and inde records as appropraite.

good luck and let us know what turns out

no offence to the owner of the Black 500E.. but it looks so wrong..
I'd pay a few thousand bucks less than what I'd pay for a stock one and bring it back to stock and sell those wheels to some dude who wants to have a phat looking car...I'm also not much a fan of the smoked tail lights and the clear signals.. they look cool on some modified 300E (like the one posted by one of our members.. but the 500E looks so good stock)

I drove that black car. I told the guy who owns it that in order for me to even consider buying it, he would have to put everything back to stock.

It was fun to drive, but there was that thumping coming from the right rear suspension when ever I went over a bump.

Hello guys,
Thank you all for responding.
First of all, can you guys see something odd on the green car? Please look at the rear and front pictures of the car. Look at the top of each bumper, between the body.. Is the car missing something? May be I was wrong. But try to compare rear and front pictures of the green car car with the black car or any other 500E. Do you see what is missing with the green car? Has it ever been in accident?

Second, I went to see the car. According to the seller, it has been one owner car and has been serviced by MB since new. There was nothing much to tell because I did not test drive the car. I wanted to do so but there is not much gas left. I even did not notice about what's missing between the body and the bumper untiil I got home and compare the picture with other 500E. All I know is there is no any strange noise with the engine but it does not mean much. Not until you test drive the car.

David Hendy, It's very nice to know that you live in brooklyn. Who else lives in NYC? I live in queens. May be we can test drive the green car together.

Pras.

Also, another thing I would like to point out, though it's purely a theory(and I still need more evidences to prove it, but...), look at the engine cover of both... The Black one has BLACK emblem and "Mercdes-Benz" letters, while the Green one has Silver Colored emblem/letters. Which(if my theory is right), the Green should be an early build 1993(which is delivered mid-late 1992) 500E, while the Black one should be "True" 1993(build/delivered in 1993).

And again, if my theory is correct(base on observations on W140s), Green MIGHT have the same HP/Torque rating as 1992, which is more powerful then the post-1992 models....

Pr_Mb,

I don't see anything wrong?? The chrome plates on top of bumpers are there... or were you referring to the gaps between bumper and body panel?? BTW, it seems the front headlight wipers are out of align...

Akry,

Look at the rear of the green car. Do you see the gaps between bumper and body panel? especially the left side. or is it just the shadow?.
Interesting point about the engine. Same year but diferrent engine color. Or may be the owner of the black car painted the engine?

Thanks.
Pras.

Hi guys:
Pr_MB: I think the black car is way out of stock for my taste. The green one seems clean and I don´t see any thing wrong with the gaps where the body meets the bumper. In reference to the engine covers I can tell you that I had a late ´93 500E that had the letters and emblem painted in silver and it was stock. I now own a ´92 model and the covers are black and I liked the former better, but I am not willing to paint them because I preffer my car stock.
Just my 2 cents !
Hope you find what you are looing for,
Regards ED

Andy,

My '92 has a silver star on the air filter housing, and black lettering. However, I think the letters started out silver but the paint flecked off-there were a few last specks of paint when I took delivery of the car.

As to the rear bumper, I see nothing wrong. I doo wonder, however, why the green car has the blank switch on the upper console? What was optionally there?

If you want me to go with you I will. I am out of town until Monday 10/22, let me know.

For the black car, if there is a thumping from the right rear over bumps, the rear shocks and accumalators have to be replaced, I had the exact same thing on my car, it is a $1300-1500 job.

well...there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the green car in terms of front or rear views. the blank switchplate in the console is actually a little LED that flashes when the alarm is armed.

the black car is just wrong.

re: the silver lettering on the airbox, initially, i believe they were painted silver, but the silver paint flaked off too easily, so m-b just left the later models black.

both of our 500s have completely black airboxes.

I thought that all 500E/E500's were Pearl Black. When I looked at the black E500, I was surprised that it was regular black.

Also the guy told me he could put it back to stock if I wanted it that way (front turn signals, rear lenses, rims). But the other problems are that the shirting was also been painted black to match the car and I don't care for that nor do I care for the rear spoiler.

It's a nice car with the exception of these few problems (and the rear suspension problem).

I wonder if this is why it was only up to $17,800 on Ebay. He told me he wanted $34,000 for it.

Craig
