Driving my 95 s500 yesterday. All is fine and then at about 70 MPH the tach starts reving to redline as though the car wss in neutral. Pull over, turn car off, restart and none of my gears will engage. I don't have a clue. Fluid is fine. Any ideas aside from take it to the dealer?

somebody has to replace the trans. this is the reason i suggest-strongly-to change the fluid every 60k. the lifetime fluid is only as long as the life of the trans. change the fluid, extend the life. good luck, chuck.

Check the linkage to the shifter to confirm it didn't just come apart while underway and the flex disks to see if they might have let go. Other than that its prob time to drop the pan and see whats in there.

BTW - The OP's trans is pre-lifetime fill as it's a 722.4 and "Lifetime fill" was revised years ago. MB's current recommendation for 722.6 and 722.9's is to change fluids once at 39k miles. THAT will prob change in the future too.

my fault for assuming it was a 722.6. i don't see enough mbs to know exactly what trans in what car w/o getting it in the air.

where did you see the 39k change fluid info? i've not seen it anywhere. thanks, chuck.

It's neither a .6 or .4 but a 722.370.

You are correct of course; should have looked it up rather than rely on memory....

It seems like .4 should have superseded .3 but it's actually just the smaller, lower torque version of .3 - that goes back to the 190E.
