Unhappy 1991 190E 2.6 Starting Problems

I have about 150000 miles on this car and it is driving me nuts trying to fix the starting problem. When cold it would start up fine and die out. Even when warm, it would do the same thing if left alone for an hour or so. Fuel pumps, filters and accumulators have been replaced and they have cured other problems. EHA has been replaced. Got a performance camshaft from Bekkers and replaced the hydraulic compensators at the same time. Fuel injectors were dirty and they were cleaned. Cold start injector was tested and it sprayed fuel as per the test for a couple of seconds. TPS and idle control were replaced and so was cap, rotor, plugs. A lot of drivability problems were solved but the starting still eludes me. OVP was changed to a new one which did not cure the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? TIA

Mercedes had an internal bulletin about this, but it is an advanced repair.

Most times, I see one of two things. Either the injectors are slowly leaking down or....

The bulletin. There is an adjustment on the rest position of the air flow plate. IF there is more than 1mm of play when the engine is turned off, from the top to when the plate just hits the plunger, it should be adjusted. This should only be done by a tech that knows how because done wrong, you will have to take off the whole fuel mixture housing to push the rest pin back up and start over or it will liquid lock the engine and blow up!

I would ck. to see if you are loosing fuel preasure, another word is the fuel going back to the tank. But you say you replaced the accumilator. There is a ck. valve on the fuel pump, it is actualy the part that the fuel lines connect to, if the ck valve is bad fuel will return and give you similar prob. I've seen alot of this also you could have internal leaking distributor. If you push on the float is it wet in there? keep me posted on the outcome like to try to help out.

Talked to the tech and we did clean the injectors and they don't drip. A year ago I attempted to replace the check valves and solve the problem. This time when the pumps were replaced, they came with check valves. The distributor float appears to be dry after running it for a bit. When I removed the old EHA and took out the adjustment bung I noticed fuel dripping. I reinstalled it without the bung and could see fuel dripping out when the car was running. Next I installed a new EHA without the bung and there was no fuel leak. Reinstalled the bung and still same problem. Some have attributed it to a fuel pressure regulator but I'm not sure. The FPR and the distributor are the only thing I have not replaced in the fuel system yet.

Benzmac, you mentioned an internal bullitin about this. Could you please cite the number or whatever they use to reference it so I could show it to the tech? Thanx a bunch.

Update. So far we have replaced the air flow meter because it had dead spots. Seemed to be better but no joy yet. Dying out seems to still occure. There was some sort of note to crank up the pressure by turning the hex screw about 1/8 of a turn in the EHA. Tried that but still no joy. Out of desperation, I took out the cleaned injectors and changed them. Much better. Response was better too. I remember being told that cleaning the injectors was a temporary measure and that it could come back again. Seems to be true. Changed the Cold Start Valve and at this time, I believe the problem to be solved. Car starts good.
