Used Motor Oil and Antifreeze Down The Drain
 

Since i have been doing my own work on my cars, i have collected many containers of used antifreeze and motor oil. where can i dump this stuff? i looked in the phone book, no help there. I called a few repair shops no one will take it. next step is the septic tank or a nearby stream :eek: Just kidding. what can i do with this stuff? your comments will be greatly appreciated.

Adam, try any chain auto parts store most out here on west coast will take any waste oil/coolant without any charge

My local Advance Auto parts takes used motor oil, but not anti-freeze. Check with the auto parts stores and also quick lube places.

Then my subdivision organize a spring clean up once a year and the trash company takes the anti-freeze.

suggest contacting your city government, they often have already set-up toxic materials drop off sites (free of charge)

I drop my toxics off at the local auto parts store collection site, no problemo.

Local government should have some way of collecting it.

In Daytona Beach, they have an oil dump at the firestations and in New Jersey, oil is accpepted at the recycling centers.

Both methods of disposal are comepletely free.

I already know where to take oil and anti-freeze. Does anyone know where you can take used brake fluid for recycling? I've never seen anywhere and all of my local recyclers say no brake fluid.

Check with your local "quick change" oil/lube stores. I take my used oil to a local Oil Deluxe store. They do not charge. You might also try a Jiffy Lube.

When my local shops give me a hard time taking my waste oil i fill it up n the appropriate container ie brake fluid in brakefluid bottles and leave it front of their bays at night , they create waste oil and coolant dont they? what do they do with it is none of my business thankyou very much!!:cool:

Try your MB dealer, they have to dispose of the stuff they change. They have taken mine before - no charge. They always ask to be sure there is no antifreeze in the oil, as it gets sold to a recycler and its worthless if there is antifreeze in it. So unless you're mixing cocktails, they should take it. Also, just about any autoparts store or gas station will take my old oil in Toronto.

In NY, I think all repair shops have to take used oil back. Even the MB dealer had a sign stating this.

I use mine to lubricate the chain and bar on my chain saws. I saw an add for Pennzoil and they said it was OK, which surprised me that they would recommend it instead of trying to sell me new bar and chain oil. I've been doing this for 20 years or so and I have not had any trouble with chain oilers. P E H

This is good advise. I have about 20 gallons of the stuff in my garage. I really ought to get rid of the suff.

Back on the farm, we had a neighbor who always poured it out on the road in front of his house to keep the dust down.:eek: Farms generate alot of used oil. I don't know if they still do that now. Come to think of it, we (my dad) used to dump it on the ground outside the workshop door!:eek:

We've come a long way baby!:D

Maybe burn them away in a diesel:D

Don't laugh at burning it in a diesel. Ryder truck rental used to pour the drained oil through a fine filter, then pour it into the fuel tanks of the truck, this was a dillution of about 5 gallons to 500. Don't try burning very much oil in your 240D per tankful, and CERTAINLY DON'T do it without filtering it.
