um wow. fan motor madness

i have an 85 300SD
i was inside my dash yesterday
WAY inside
just about as far in as possible without actually removing it
i was trying to replace the key lock
actually the plug receptical on the back of the locking mech
my hands are just too damn big and it seems as though the mech was installed with the dash off
anyway
while i had the center console and and the foot wells completely dismantled and shifted around and broke a few things, i apparently scrambled something
i put everything back together (after deciding to continue using a screw driver to actually start the car)
this morning driving to work i met a new bug
i was just getting onto the highway and noticed that the moment my heater blower reached full power the car died completely
full stop on side of highway
i thought (at first) it was because my fuel guage was bad and i had run empty
but when i tried to restart the engine it turned over immediately
when i attempted to turn the fan back on the engine would die as soon as the fan reached full power
tried it several times durring the drive
never to the point of coming to a full stop on the highway again but long enough to know that if i didn't shut off the fan it would
anyone had this problem?
any ideas where to start my investigation?
i plan to remove the fan control cover plate and see if i have loose wires
also
if anyone has a simple way to remove the key mech that doesn't involve tearing out the dash, let me know
thx
c
