Help! 190E, 2.6, '89 acceleration problem
 

Car information: 190E, 2.6, six cylinders, '1989

Problem:
If the car is cold, i.e. the first 5 minutes of operation, when I push the acceleration pedal, e.g. around a corner, the car wants to die. In the past, it did die couple time. I have replaced the distributer cap, rotor, spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter. I also used fuel injection gas additives to clean the injectors, diaphragm, etc. I didn't notice much difference. The valve cover gasket was leaking minutely, I replaced it as well. After all those repairs, the car does not die anymore but the problem still exists.

I usually see problems like this come from a variety of sources. Some include the overvoltage relay and the ignition coil.

if the engine is only acting up when cold look for the following,
lean fuel mixture(can be caused by bad coolant temp sensor or incorrect adjustment at c.i.s. adj. tower)or low voltage output from coil.
make sure the plugs are not resistor type plugs

My car (85 190E 2.3) has a similar problem - hesitates a lot when cold. All secondary ignition parts have been changed. Today I got the O2 sensor replaced. The tech said it should fix it. Lets see - I am not that optimistic any more. Did you get the airflow sensor checked? My own reading leads me there - it sure is an elusive problem. Let me know what fixes it for you!

I got several good answers today. I need to try them. Here are the possibilities: The temperature sensor, cracked vacuum hose, OVP (over voltage protection) fuse or the OVP itself, air flow sensor, O2 sensor, wrong kind of spark plugs, and the possibilities seem to be unlimited!

I thought that Mercedeses ran forever without problems! Maybe, if it was an American car, it would have been already in the junk yard!

Disregard O2 sensor.It only works when engine
is hot.My vote goes to OVP and Ign.Coil.
