Is Mobil 1 0w good in winter?
 

Hi, I have try to do a search first on this, but did not find anything. But , here goes...I have just moved to Minnesota and the temp will get below 0 and I was wondering which motor oil
should I use in this temp.? Mobil 1SYN should I use
0w?, 5w or 15w? one more question what is 0w anyway? please help and thank-you

I had the same question about a year ago and read somewhere that with synthetic oil, the issue is to determine the minimum air temp in which the vehicle will be started, as well as the max air temp in which it will be operated, and to select your weight grade accordingly. My ML and I spend a lot of time in the mountains in the winter months, and I went with Mobil 1 0-30

If your car is of the most recent makeyear form say '99 I would opt for the new Mobil 1 0W-40 for year round use. Onr grade, no hassle.

However, on slighly older MB, say pre-'99, I prefer to use 10w30 synthetic in winter as I am afraid the thin 5w or 0w may drain through the non-return check valve in the engine oil passageways. And that engine tolerance on these older designs may not like the ultra th

I use Mobil 1 15w-50 for hard summer driving for our '97 C280 as advised by a fellow who started off in MB in Germany 20years ago. Uses a bit more petrol but it is a price I pay for peace of mind.

Thanks guys, so if I only drive in the city and I have 86's 16V I should not use the 0w or 5w and use the 10w is this correct?

Dear John,

I do not doubt as Blackmercedes said Mobil 1 5w30 is good oil but for reason I stated before My vote is for 10w30 on your 16v.

If you look at the data sheet of Mobil 1. You could see the cold start performance difference between the 2 is really minimal. Just pick what you feel more haapy with and you will not go wrong.

Hi John,

Take in from a fellow Minnesotan -- you'll be fine with the Mobil 1 0W or 5W. I've used it for years in my cars. If 0W-40 is available (I haven't seen it around here and you can't order it directly from the Mobil-1 e-store), this is probably the better choice.

By the way, welcome to Minnesota. Now, about those dedicated winter tires that you WILL have to get......

From what I've heard/read/experienced, it seems to me that exactly which Mobil 1 viscosity one chooses is really not that important. The data sheet says it all. For the vast majority of us, pumpability limits are so low even for 15W-50 that even it would work just fine, as verified by Wisconsinites and Chicagoans I've heard from.

I second the remarks above about dedicated winter tires. TireRack can send you mounted and balanced tire/wheel sets with Michelin Arctic Alpins (my choice) or Blizzaks.

Thank you for the welcoming ;) , I have see 0W all over Target store around my area (Apple Valley). So, what year is your mercedes? Some ppl are saying if I have an older Benz (86 16V), I should go with the 10w? So, let me know..thanx

Steve is right in that most any grade of Mobil-1 will work in cold weather. I even ran 15W-50 during part of one winter. Having said that, however, when things get below zero degrees, battery capacity drops off markedly, fluids thicken and engine cranking speeds are reduced. To give you that "extra" measure of security (who wants to be stuck with a car that won't start when the temperature is below zero?), I'd go with either the 0W or 5W Mobil-1; it does make a difference during those super-cold arctic days and nights which we get a dozen times or so in a typical winter.

The 0W-30 is probably overkill and works best with newer cars. I use this in my wife's high-revving 4 cylinder car and there is absolutely no oil consumption. For older cars like your '86, I'd go with the 5W-30 and you'll be just fine. Then switch to the 15W-50 in the summer. If you told a local MB dealership that you were going to use 5W-30 Mobil-1 in your car in this winter that would say "great choice".

Now that it's snowing outside, let's get back to the winter tire issue. Steve is right again -- those are two excellent choices. I've used both. In fact Luke is sending me another set of Artic-Alpins to replace the worn set on my wife's car. For your car I'd get the Blizzak WS-50s. What I did was mount the winter tires on the existing wheels (they'll be on the car 5 months here) and then purchased separate wheels and summer tires in a plus one sizing. You've got a rear wheel drive car with no electronic traction control. But if you don't want to spend a lot of money for a 1986 car, I understand that too. Good luck!

After all the info. I got from your nice people about which oil do I use so, I called around the benz shop and to my supprised none allow me to bring in my motor oil (they all use other than mobil 1) :mad: So, what do I do?! Should I bring it into the dealer? But, they are all book till Nov!!! and for a oil change is $70...(it only cost $40 in South Carolina) Maybe I 'll just bring it to Jiffy lube :eek: :mad: and :confused:

Well you could come over to my place and we could change your oil for you. Either that or go to Mauer's Mercedes on HW100 and Excelsior. He'll probably change it for you, but it'll be expensive

Hey speaking of the subject, I work close to Mauer's Mercedes, do they do a good job?! I have seen mobil 0w all over target....
Where is your place?! If it is close I don't mind..let me know
