w126 suspension

OK now I'm really lost. I have an '83 500 SEL Euro with the pneumatic suspension. cable seems to be a little stretched but with the lever pulled all the way out, the suspension goes all the way up and rides like a buck board,i.e.(hitting my head off of the headliner while going over bumps) my wife thinks it's comical when she is following me down the highway . When I push the lever all the way in, she drops to about 3" from the road. Sorry, can't run down the road with the cat. dragging . Is thier anykind of adjustment or am I screwed unless I spent the $$$ to switch over?? This vehicle will be for $ale as soon as the new rubber is installed and the inspection is complete, which should be in about a week. I would prefer to have this fixed before I put her up for sale. Can anyone help????

Sounds like the accumulators are going bad due to all the bouncing.

I've only seen a very few cars with front and rear SLS, both were in junkyards. I THINK they have five accumulators. Probably cost you far more to fix than you're wanting to spend and the car is worth if you have to take it somewhere.

Thanx Hit Man!
Upon further inestigation, when the lever is all the way down the suspension is at a semi normal level but still has some bounce almost feels like their is no relief when the suspension moves. Is their a valve that allows air flow thru the suspension similar to the dampening of a normal strut? or is that the accumulators that you're talking about. Is their anyway to test an accumulator?? I remember the accumulator from the audi 100 that I had, but that was for the brakes.
I just mounted 4 new tires which gave a little help, but not much and the inserts that I installed in the front seats also helped a little. Love the car expecially the power from the V-8, but she's on craigslist for sale for $2500 or best offer. Hate to see her go but I have other projects that are taking precedence.

The suspension is hydraulically driven.

Is this the SLS suspension we're talking about?

Yes. Some ECE cars had front and rear. It's a real... well... birdsnest to deal with.

At least I do have a shop manual to help. It reminds me of looking at a wiring schematic ;-0...... Is their anyway to recondition or clean out the accumulators? Could I have a problem with the self leveling valve that isn't allowing any dampening when you hit bumps??? It looks like a low rider that is stuck in the high position!!! HELP!! PLEASE, I'm hoping that their is a simple cost effective solution.

I second that! I'd love to see how that system looks/works.
