SL500 ASR Trouble

I have a 1995 SL 500 that I keep in storage during the winter. When I went to get the car out of storage the battery was dead. I put a battery charger on it for a couple of hours while I did other things. After the car started I noticed that the ASR and Anti lock brake lights were on. I started my drive I noticed that the speedometer and the gauge that tells about fuel consumson were not working either. Also the cruse control doesn't work. All of these things were working properly when I put the car away. I am thinking that maybe the battery charger sent a surge thru the cars electrical system. I have checked all fuses including those behind the fuse box where the Modules are located. Everything looks good. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Is there one module that controls all of these functions? I live in Montana, and the only Mercedes dealer is about 4 hours away. I would really like to get this figured out with our taking the car in. Any help will be great!

I had the same ABS/ASR problem with my SL during winter storage a couple of years ago. I replaced the battery as it was more that four years old. Once I started the car the ABS/ASR lights were on. With the engine running and the car in park I turned the steering wheel all the way to the left and then all the way to the right and the lights went out. I did not experience the other issues you stated. However, I purchased a "battery tender" to slowly charge the battery after winter storage. This has worked very well for me. Good luck with your other issues.

Charge must be a complete charge [ over-night]

..and spin your fuses in their holder...

I have been driving the car for over a week now, using my GPS for a speedometer. Since driving it, I have noticed that the cruse control doesn't work and the engine won't rev past 4500 RPM. Once the engine hits 4500 RPM it starts cutting out really bad, before that point the car runs just fine. It seems like there must be a point where all of these things are connected, some control module etc....

Thumbs up

I tried turning it off for 10 sec and on for 90 sec then started the car. No luck. I have also tried turning the steering wheel and all of the suggestions on this tread, but no luck. I really do appreciate all of the ideas that have come in, because I had none of my own.

K

Here is one more common for ASR cars that have sat in storage....

Check that the air pressure is equal in all 4 for tires ..ASR makes wheel speed comparisoms at all corners and if one is off circumference, it will pop ASR/ABS.

Remove the lid on the control unit box, near the right hood hinge. It has a round "cap" for access to the diagnostic connector. There are four or five control units in there. The one with the clear plastic cover is the base module, check the fuses in the top of it. Typically, one will blow, sometimes from a voltage spike (jump starting?) and can cause the ABS and ASR lights to illuminate. Check there first! --Z
