From Park to Reverse "Clank"
 

My 1989 300SE trans makes a loud "clank" when shifting from park to reverse first thing in the morning and also from drive to reverse...except when I'm sitting still and shift from one to the other. When I move just a bit and then shift into reverse, it would make that noise. I'm afraid to say; it sounds like metal against metal!

I checked the trans fuild level (made sure NOT to "contaminate the dip stick") and it appeared to be fine.

I think I'm going to have the trans fuild changed first (of course) but is this something that anyone else is experiencing?

It could be the front flex disk. It mated the transmission to the drive shaft. If it si worn, it gets loose and then the clunk.

I head these disks run between 80 to 100 kmi.

I mean the front flex disk lasts about 80 to 100 kmi. The rear one lasts longer (150 kmi).

I have the same problem on my '89 300se. But that has 144k on the clock. I presumed it was just the age of the car, and wear and tear, but if it can be fixed, I'll look into it.

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be I had bad motor mounts. Changed them and it took care of the problem. Everytime I shifted, the motor lifted and fell back into place with a loud thud.
