Master link

The timming chain on my 420 was replaced before i purchesed the car.It has only 100 mi. on it .I noticed the same copper link but the two link pins each have little C clips on them. The pins are not crimped over the clips.Should thay be ? And how long will this m-link last?

heck the hard part is complete

Rolling in the chain at least. Purchase a master link that you "crimp" on, rent the tool and crimp a new master link in the one where the "c" clip master link is. You do not want to go too many miles with your existing arrangement. I would imagine that an independent can do it for a relatively small amount of $$.

Do you know where i can rent this crimping tool in GEORGIA?

I have not been able to find this tool. Everybody I talk to looks back me with a blank stare. They all tell me that they have never seen a chain that is not continuous. "American cars don't use 'em" they all say.

Fine. Mine does. Now how can I crimp it?

I'm on the list to rent the tool. If someone here has it rented out, could you return it soon?:D

It's $36.50 for a 21 day rental. Better than the $238 to buy it.

I used the bit from a nut splitter to put on my oil pump chain. But I'm not comfortable enough to leave it that way. I'd like the proper tool. I still have to do the timing chain.

Thanks!

mpl - that is an interesting comment you made about the oil pump chain. I am considering replacing the oil pump and oil pump chain on my 300D. Is there room to get the crimping tool up in there to crimp the oil pump chain?
thanks

TChains

Hi, regarding the master links - I am an old Alfa Romeo tinkerer, and am new to the MB mark, w/ (2) Euro 16Vs. I bought a new chain W/out realizing that both cars had had both chains & tensioners done w/ in 40k mi. or less. I was quite surprised to find that there was no "clip" style master (like alfa's)w/ the new chain! Over the course of 30years and myriad cars representing MILLIONS of engine miles, I have never experienced a failed chain nor failed "clip" style master link. In fact, a dealer wrench of 12yrs told me he'd seen only one failure, on a new car, which was clearly a defect from the factory. The chains however ARE duplex--
is it possible that a single row puts significantly more strain on the master??

Jim,

I don't recall if the motor has to come out of your car to change the oil pump, but it did on my 190E. If it does, then it's moot as you will have all all the room in the world for the crimper.

Although my block is back in the engine compartment, I still have both the lower and upper timing chain cover off. There is still room for the crimper. (Unless the tool is much larger than I believe it to be)
