How to burp cooling system in M103?
I'm doing some reading on the cooling system for the M103 here and many people are suggesting "burping" the system after a coolant flush?
it's slightly vague how this is being done, could someone explain this to me? do I just leave the reservoir cap off the car on a cold start, and let it run for about 10 minutes and recap? I just did a coolant, reservoir, and thermostat replacement on my 93 2.6 and now the temperatures are running kind of high, so more information on making the cooling system run properly would be helpful. |

Be aware that there are different temperature thermostats.

yeah i am aware of that, I purchased an 87C thermostat. but I feel I should give this "burping" technique a try because I've never done it before and seems like something that should be done.
all I did today was: 1. replace reservoir 2. drain at bottom of the radiator with reservoir cap off 3. drain at crankcase under the exhaust manifolds with the 14mm bolt on cylinder head off 4. replace the thermostat 5. recapped, rebolted, tightened everything. 6. refilled the reservoir, got about 1.75 gallons in through there. 7. recapped the reservoir and started the car, checking for leaks. I didn't do any of this burping business and car seems to run hotter than I think it should be. |

I am not sure on the whole procedure but if someone knows of the one please explain....
The one I read about was for the w124 chassis with m103 and mentioned driving the front of the car on ramps.... Like I said I cannot remember where I read it or how the procedure went but it was very detailed and I hope someone can explain it or at least know the site I am talking about. |

about burping your vehicle
How about this. Put your car on ramps take the expansion tank cap off and put your heater on full blast. Maybe there is a chance you need more coolant. After burping the system you might find the coolant still needs to be topped off.

I do not think you need to be overly concerned about this but raising the front of the car will help.
On the M103, I think there are two coolant plug screws on the left of the engine and to the right of the thermostat. When you unscrew them and see coolant come out, then it is good to go. |

Open the heater valves completely and get the engine to op temp. Parking on an incline facing up-hill so that air - if in the system - will raise to the filler cap, which should now be the highest point. Then remove the cap but not completely - just enough to hear the air releasing, so you don't lose coolant.

Squeeze the upper radiator hose repeatedly until the coolant level in the reservoir tank stops going down. Then you should have gotten out all the air and it should run at regular operating temps.
