Psycho turn signals (too fast) on old 240D?
 

What's broken on my '76 240D (115 series) to make the turn signals flash at an insane rate? All the bulbs seem to be working, though some have been recently replaced with generic auto-supply bulbs. The "flasher" looks to be some transistorized (read expensive) module. If this has gone gunny-sack, am I destined to pay big $$ for a replacement, or can I wire-in a more traditional $8 flasher unit?

The first thing that comes to my mind is that you may need original MB bulbs. This effects some cars cruise control system and could possibly be causing your problem. Are you sure that they are all working - turn signal on and then look around outside?

Hey friends & neighbors! Want to know how to annoy the @@##**!! out of everyone on a forum? Post a question BEFORE you search, not after! I realized immediately after I started this thread that I hadn't searched, and as it turns out, there are quite a few similar threads already posted.

So anyway, the popular vote seems to be either wrong bulbs or corroded sockets (or both, as would be the case with my car), but what I really want to know is: do the flasher units ever give up? Is it ALWAYS an amperage issue, or are there any other reasons for rapid flashing??

had same issue on my '75 450SL, tried replacing all the bulbs with no luck, replaced the flasher relay and voila, they worked fine again...no more high speed flashing when using turn signals or hazards lights.

I believe the MB electronic circuit is built on an amperage system. Took me a couple of weeks to figure this out. Though, I also believe that this may not be the primary principle governing the rapid flashes - so you might also want to check the flasher relay.

But start with the bulbs.

Had similar problem awhile back. Seems that the amperage thing hold true, when there is nothing to take the load, like a working blinker, then the relay goes insane. When all bulbs are good/working, the relay works as advertised, when a bulb goes bad when turn the blinker switch to the bad bulb it blinks at an out of control rate because nothing is absorbing the load/amps. Check the blinker when you do this, if the light/bulb is good and flashing but out of control, then probably the relay or something else bad causing extra amperage in the system.

Just had this prob on minr . Put i9t on hazard and realized left front and right rear did'd't work.
bad sockets!. Cleaned them with 320 grit glued to a dowel rod. Now they all work.
