Simply "pops" into the wood trim.

Most of the time you wouldn't need to wood trim at all.

Hardest part is getting the console wood out to replace the switch.

Process is long and detailed. Plenty of opportunity for damage to existing items.

Suggest you purchase an AllDataDIY subscription for about $20. There are detailed instructions on how to get the console wood out so you can change the switch.

I replaced mine (W124) years ago when the knob broke off the shaft. Don't remember the process being all that difficult.

As said, removal of the console is necessary, but I had been in there before.

To remove Horizontal Console wood

Pull up the front of the small rectangular piece of carpet under Driver's Armrest
[The "Console Tray"].There is one Phillips head screw, remove it.
There is a Black plastic surround that fits the inner diameter (Rectangular)
of the Shifter area Gently wriggle it up and off.
Place shifter lever in Neutral.
Gently, ever so gently Pivot the wood piece Upwards from the rear...
There are two plastic hooks in the front edge of the wooden piece...
[If you break them they are available as replacement parts,BUT you'll never
get the staples that affix them to the wooden console piece, OUT!]
So what you're doing is moving the rear of the wood piece from horizontal to
vertical,Whilst the front of the wooden piece remains down.
The Mirror switch is a "Friction Fit" into it's plug which is attached to the Console...You just wiggle it upwards.

As I indicated before, loosen the screw on the ashtray lid after removing the ash tray insert, slide it upward and remove. Then locate the two lateral (sideways) torx that hold the upper and lower panels together and remove them. Once they are removed and the shift trim is removed by pulling up on it, the panel can be raised on the ash tray side, and then pulled slightly forward to release the catch on the arm rest side. The two phillips screws that you see looking straight down hold the upper console panel.
