Engine is 104. Really wanted to avoid replacing parts one by one to get to the problem. Wires cost me $160, coil will be another $60.

M104? This is a replacement motor? Understand your need to keep from needlessly installing parts, but everything in the ignition system is a maintenance item that you have to expect to replace on some sort of schedule. You don't tell us anything about its maintenance history, so we have to assume that it's just the coil's time to be replaced. Naturally, that's your decision to make, but you shouldn't be puzzled why the motor isn't running smoothly when you can see for yourself that you have arcing ignition components.

OK, thanks Arthur. Sorry Dmitry. But here's what puzzles me. The EPC indicates that the 124.050 uses the 103.983 motor.

Yep, sure enough. Starting in MY 1990, the coupe did in fact use the 104 motor, but in '88 and '89, the US version coupe had the 103. In my mind, I was thinking the early coupes. My bad. Well, Dmitry, now that that's all sorted out and you were right all along, it still doesn't change the issue you face with the need to attend to those arcing ignition components.

I am hesitant to sink the money in the car since I almost don't use it now
(no more commute, bought a scion Xb since baby was born, just lost my job).
Going back 3 years ago I wouldn't think twice and replace everything.

In any case, I still love the car and getting the new coil as well. As far as I know it was never replaced before.
I did however replaced the wires and distributor cap 10 years ago.
3 years ago replaced voltage regulator.

I see OVP relay popping up a lot in other discussions related to similar symptoms. Will this be the next step? Also Arthur mentioned a sticking
EGR valve. I think mine is working but pipe is clogged somewhere close to the engine. (tried cleaning it with a guitar string wire but no result)

If you start the car once or twice a week only to change sides of the road for street cleaning purposes your plugs are likely fouled. Engines don't like to run for short periods of time with an enriched mixture---very bad. I didn't see in your posts that you have replaced the plugs. Replace them if you haven't already. Mark
