W126 accelerator issue? Sometimes wont accelerate!
 

UPDATE... sprayed WD-40 on the linkages and its smooth as silk now. What a difference. :) May NOT have have needed a pedal after all... but oh well.

Its been only happening occasionally, but on my 88' 300SEL when I first press the pedal, it kinda dont want to go down, then it will quickly go down. However, today it was doing that and about 5 miles before I got home, there were a couple of times it would hardly do down and I had to accelerate up a hill (this is not good in a 300SEL with the A/C on!).

Any clues to whats going on?

Any possiblity your floor mat has ridden under your pedal? Don't ask me how this.

Gas pedal broken. The little ball that is made into the gas pedal that slips over the metal accelerator rod breaks off the pedal and jams between the pedal and the rod and makes pushing the accelerator very hard and the rod doesn't move as it should , hence the inability to push on the accelerator. New pedal at the dealer is approx $12.00 and now comes with the rubber over lay intact.

I've had the same thing happen to me twice actually. When it does just pull the pedal towards you and push on the bar itself. Don't worry, if you can pull the pedal then its already broken with no chance of fixing. Installation is easy and frankly, I have a harder time getting the mat out then I do replacing the pedal. Just don't forget to pull the old rubber off the metal accelerator bar.

Thanks for the replies... well it dont sound to major. :) Yeah, I looked and the floor mat is in place, but I will double check.

I took a chance and drove the car back to town and it was the same story... it would be fine one minute, then hard to press again, then it would all of a sudden it would flop down fast. Very annoying.

So is replacing it pretty self exclamatory?

Any special tools needed? Anything under the hood have to be disconnected?

This kinda happened at a good time, because I would not even be driving the car again until next Sunday, because I am going out of town this weekend and getting a rental and next week I work all week and drive the Lexus.

My 560 just had the pedal fail, same deal. I had a few spare used around so just swapped it, but good to know new from MB is so inexpensive.

Well, I was unable to get down to the local MB dealer this week to get one, but I need to drive the car tomorrow. Is there a temporary fix I can do until I get a pedal?

Someone said I could pull it up, since its broken. Could I do that if needed and then will it go down normally with the pedal itself pulled away? I just dont want to drive the car tomorrow and get caught out and not be able to accelerate.

Just remove it and use the rod as the "pedal"... I had to do this on my 300SD lol

While in there, verify linkage is opening TB 100% too.

Your right, it was $12.35 at our dealer. :) They had one in stock, so I got them to hold it for me until Thursday. Hopefully I will have enough smarts to replace it myself. :rolleyes:

Like a fool, I drove the car again today and it was hard to press most of the time... one time it even got stuck when I was on a rural 4-lane highway accelerating up a grade... when I leveled out and let off of the accelerator pedal, it didnt come up.:eek: Quick thinking, I had to turn the cars ignition off and ease off onto the side of the highway, then onto a low-traveled side road and then pull the pedal up with my foot, then restarted the car and went on my back, but carefully. I vowed then that I would not drive it again until this was replaced. Thankfully I was on a straight-stretch with no traffic and not some curve or in town. :rolleyes: I didnt know it would get stuck down, but it did. Anyone having pedal problems should get them replaced ASAP without delay.

Well, brand new pedal from dealer 6 weeks ago... all was fine for about 6 weeks, now its starting to do what it did before... occasionally more pressure required to push about 1/4 way down, then popping down really easy all of a sudden and then not wanting to go down further without more pressure beyond 1/2 way. :rolleyes:

Seems to only do it on my "second" trip out in it. Strange.

I am about to stomp it through the floor pan. ;) When I installed the new pedal, should I have depressed it all the way to the floor to lock it in place or something? :confused:

Is it possible that something is bent where I had to force the old pedal when I was out when it started this.

FWIW, my old pedal looked identical to the new one... I cant see where it was actually "broken".

I am wondering if some linkage under the hood is binding or something?

It did it worse today, so when I got home and stopped the car in its parking space and shut it off, out of frustration I just stomped it to the floor a few times and it seems to be OK now. Go figure. :rolleyes:

Time will tell. I dont know whats going on with it.

Sounds like you need to check all of the linkages for binding. Re-grease all the ball joints on the linkage, and also verify linkage going to the cruise control unit as well as the unit itself. Feel around, and have somebody work the pedal as you do so. The problem will present itself.

Ironically, I had a 85 380SE that needed new fuel injectors, but I didnt do it. The Mercedes shop was going to do it for $300.

easy job, do it yourself.

Well, I dont have any problems with the injectors on my current car... only the accelerator pedal is sometimes quirky and hard to depress... even after a brand new pedal from the Mercedes-Benz dealer. :rolleyes:

Well, its not as bad as it was, but the pedal is still not as easy to depress before it really messed up and before I put on the new pedal.

Today there was an instance where I had to really press hard on the pedal. I am concerned its going to stick on me and end up causing me to crash.

Here are some photos I took today... can anyone look at these and visually tell me if all looks to be in order? Can I maybe oil/lube all of these linkage areas and hope it will cure the problem? What would be best? 3 in 1 oil, WD40? I am not sure whats going on. Again, I was told months ago I probably had a broken pedal at the floor, but when I took it off, it looked fine, but I replaced it anyway with a brand new Mercedes OEM pedal... still is quirky.

What area is most likely the culprit? Looks like there are several different linkage points... :rolleyes:
