722.6 tranny in Daimler Super V8 ?

we have a problem on a friends 1997 Daimler Super V8 with 153k miles. I believe it has a Mercedes auto transmission. When shifted from P to D it takes up to a minute until it engages. I know this question is a little bit off topic but maybe somebody can help and point us in the right direction??

Greetings from Vienna

I would suggest first check the fluid level. Maybe the oil filter is plugged. See picture below.

thank you, i guess i misstated the problem.:( after the engine is started you cannot move the lever from P to D. It will not unlock. After a minute or so the lock disengages and everything seems fine......

cheers,

Reinhard

I see. There is a hole on the shifter (near the bottom). You can stick a pen into it and then move the shifter. It should be in the owner's manual.

However, if this happen every time, then there is a problem in the shifter module. Basically, the module is locked in Park.

this is exactly what we did and it works!!!! once you press the break pedal the shifter will unlock with a clicking sound as it should. if the problem returns you think the module should be replaced??? is this located right under the shifter cover?

thank you,

reinhard

With this cars, you really should get the faulty codes scanned. Otherwise it is kind of like a guessing game.

One mechanical thing yu can check. Make sure the shifter mechanism is OK, not loose. There are a couple small bushings in the mechanism and they are made of teflon.

Yes, the shifter module is under the shifter cover.

many thanks,
will do that if error keeps coming back. my friend now tells me this problem has been going on for over a year and was really annoying when somebody was waiting to take his parking sot and so on... the dealership did not want to investigate citing high costs in looking for error:confused: anyway, he is really happy now!!
