140 evap core

Hey guys, I have the lovely pleasure of replacing the evaporator core in my fathers 95 s320. Is there anywhere I can look to get some detailed directions on line? This seems to be a weakness on the 140 platform. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That is a BIG job on the W140 platform since the car was basically built around the evaporator.

Steve Brotherton did an Excellent write-up on the subject here:

Good luck.

evap on most cars is a lot of work and requires to remove of a lot of stuff to get at it.

The maddening thing is that you can see it gleaming at you, all nice and shiny and just inches away, through the center vents. It would be nice if the engineers caught themselves and made it as easily accessible as the radio.

Do yourself a favor. Unless you have a lot of time and tools and a great place to work on this save this one for a pro. I have seen photos of 140's with most of the interior out on them. One wrong move and you can break expensive to replace trim and plastic. I have a feeling that most local shops don't even make a lot of money on this because of how time consuming it is.

The upside of having this done is knowing that you won't have to have it done for a while. If you keep the paperwork and intend on selling the car it could be a prospective selling point to a new owner knowing its been done recently. I try to put repairs like this in perspective. It might cost you $2000+ to have the dash pulled out but you likely won't have to have it done again for a long time.

It could be worse every 30K miles my Porsche has to have a $1500 timing belt put in it as part of its regular service. I have a friend with a Ferrari Mondial who spends $15,000 every 30K service because they remove the engine and transmission.

Yes there's a pretty big variance in labor costs on the exotics depending on where you bring them. The friend in question does most of his work at his local dealership.

Yes, I did mine ('94 S500 cpe) a few years ago, and I had a MB Senior Tech as the "brains". It was worth it b/c nothing was broken and the job was finished in apx 10hours.
