christopher,
My 1986 190E 2.3-16 has done that for the last 10 years every winter. I think something inside must wear to the point that there is an instability like a half frequency whirl in a fluid film bearing. Anyway, once my car warms up the problem goes away. I figured trying to fix it might make it worse, so I elected to leave it alone and turn the heat up a little until it goes away. It is a pretty nasty snapping around, bouncing off the pegs at each end of the speed range. If it breaks it will force me to fix it. It actually seems to be getting better, meaning it has to be really cold to happen now, and it responds quickly to the heat. I will watch this thread to see what the recommended course of action ends up being. Good Luck, Jim
