help changing primer pump

can anyone give me instructions on how to change my diesel primer pump on a 84 300D. i opened it and every time i pull the plunger up a whole bunch of diesel leaks out from the sides of the shaft, same when i push it down. i saw the pump itself is only about 4" long with flats on the bottom to accomodate a wrench. can i just replace this part or is there more to it? i saw on fast lane thatthe pump itself is about $15 but the primerpump assembly presumably including the valves etc is about $150. has any one elese had this problem.
thanks for the help.

Easy Job

Greetings Turbo,

The part you saw on Fastlane is the primer pump only, which is the part you need if yours is leaking. It's simply a matter of unthreading the old one and refitting the new pump. This will fix the o-ring leaks you are experiencing now. Less than a half hour and you'll be leak free with a new pump primer. If you order the other part it is the lower half or the actual fuel pump. Probably not what you need as described on your post.

thanks charles, i was thinking maybe i could change the leaking o-ring and maybe solve the problem that way so i will try that while i am in there. it it fails then i will change the primer pump, just to learn a lesson.
thanks again.

If it's not leaking when the pump is closed, I don't think the o-ring is your problem. As can-do says, this is an easy repair, probably only five minutes. The other 25 will be getting the car where you want it, finding the wrench you need, and cleaning up the mess.

Good luck,

Not worth the time to repair

Greetings Turbo,

Don't waste your time removing the old primer pump to replace the o-ring, because the one that is defective is internal and can not be removed because of the crimped design of the pump. The o-ring you see at the top of the pump only serves to seal the plunger knob when threading it down. The new one that you will receive when you order will be a different design and much more user friendly, doesn't need to be screwed out or in to use.
