Check Engine Light ('94 E320)

The check engine light came on in my car, so I went to Autozone to use their computer reader (not sure what it's called), but I couldn't find where to plug it in to.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John

You have a '94, the OBDII readers (like Autozoo) are for '96-up.

Search "code reader" here and you should find the thread with Arthur's code reader for your car, and the codes de-coded.

Your car has a plug near the battery (should have a cover on it), a button next to a LED, that will read the codes for the Check Engine light (CEL).

Check Engine Light ('94 E320)

So I finally took the time to look at this and it returned a code #5 (EGR). Thanks for all of your helps, guys. I haven't checked my repair manual yet, but I assume that I nned to replace the EGR valve?

No, it likely means the pipe from the EGR valve to the throttle body is clogged. How many miles on your car? If over 80 or 90k, the tube is clogged. They all do it eventually due to the crappy design of the EGR system. You can attempt to clean the tube using a drill motor, an old speedo cable, and some solvent (roto-rooter method), but the right thing to do is to replace the tube. The part is about $70 and it is a major PITA to do that job. The last quote I saw on the forum here for that job was over $900.

To verify that this is the problem, you need to test the EGR valve and its ancillary systems. You can do that yourself pretty easily with a hand vacuum pump like a MityVac. If you want to try, let me know and I'll hook you up with some links to do the job.

The EGR is a common code (5).

More detail is available using a search, but it is likely that either the vacuum hose to the EGR is leaking (EGR not functioning), or the EGR is not closing properly (stuck), or the ETR tube is plugged with carbon.

A valve failure necessitating replacement is much less likely.

Thanks Guys!
Would you be able to send me some diagrams for replacing the tube? (I'm a visual learner)

PS- My car has 126K miles on it.

I would just clean it out. The existiing tube is fine, just dirty. It helps to detach at both ends, so you can get to the intake side somewhat using extreme dexterity and angles, some also go work from bottom of the car.
