For JCD . . .

I use BP2000 in both my cars and they charge about $2.30 a litre for this stuff in bulk. Cheap at half the price I think . . .

I found the reference of the test I mentioned at

http://db.mercedes.cx/mb/199701/0931.html

Here is the summary:

There was once some discussion on this list regarding whether or nor sucking the oil from the sump with a Topsider Oil Changer gets ALL the oil out.

Well...I did a test. I filled a new MB sump (thanks to Bill Alexander) with water and removed the drain plug and allowed the water to drain out. I then measured the amount of water left in the sump.

There was 500ml left - about 2 cups = one half quart.

Next, I filled the sump again and used a Topsider to suck the water out. I had cut the end of the suction tube at a 45 degree angle so it would not seal against the bottom of the sump. I kept the sump level and allowed the Topsider suction tube to suck out all it could while holding the tube vertical to the sump bottom as it would be in actual use.

There was less than 200 ml of water left in the sump - less than 1 cup..

Conclusion: The suction method removes slightly more oil from the sump than the drain method.

This test was done with a sump part number 616 014 01 22 found on almost all 240D and 300D and gas 6-cyl MBs from 1974 to 1985. Just looking at the drain plug location in the sump shows that some oil will always be left in the bottom after an oil drain, so for those of you who are anal retentive about removing EVERY LAST DROP of oil at oil change time...just get over it...;-)

I guess you could tilt your car over to the left somewhat to get another 200 ml of oil to drain out... or remove the sump and drain it completely...;-)

Bo,

did you consider the flow dynamics and particulate remediation characteristics in your tests.

Just kidding

If the owner's manual recommends oil change every 7500 miles for 300E and 5000 miles for 300D then why would anybody change oil at 1500 or 2000 miles.

I have been changing oil every 7500 miles 93 300E with 140000 miles. 5000 mile change on 87 300D with 220000 miles. I bought these cars three years ago. We drive about 100 miles every day.

Engines are very clean and no problems. I just use regular oil with correct ratings.

No Sludge in my oilpan

Hey Larry B. I deent know jew could spoka de El Spinach?
There was a time when the recomended oil change was 1000 miles, then along came the detergent additives.
If my old grey matter doesn't fail me I believe it was Texaco's Havoline.

3,000 miles or less for me. I stick a floor jack under the passenger side to get that extra little bit out from draining out of the drain plug.

For a while my wife was commuting 125 miles/day (non-MBZ). To keep from going crazy with oil changes, I would go 10,000 miles on Mobil 1. At the 5,000 mile mark I would spin a new filter on and add 1/2 a quart. Worked like a charm. I trusted the oil, but I worried about a clogged filter.

I've never had the problem with gas diluting my oil.

Every 5k with synthetic Mobil 1 (Delvac 1 in the D), all cars. All seem to run as-new.

Only time I vary is with track events-beating on the 500 I try to give it a change right after, regardless of mileage.

And after sucking the oil out of my M119 motor with a Topsider, NO oil come out of the drain plug orifice

We need a post about "How often do you put gas in your car?" or "Do you change the air in your tires", no offense to anyone but we've worn this oil change thing out! Change it every day if you like but seriously, some of these threads are ridiculous

How Silly Can We Get?

Brother of The Benz, Cap'n Carageous,
One of the pleasures in life is being silly about our car and then sharing that wierd behavior with others of like kind.
If dragging this topic on is offensive, I opologize.
It is amusing that the offended one participates in the thread with whatever info he can supply.
I remember back quite some time ago when the long winded topic was Dyno or Synth Motor oil.
Then for a while it was coolant.
Oh well this will die as well provided it is allowed to do so on it's own.

Anyone who cannot make an intelligent decision about when oil should be changed in a Mercedes Benz needs to be driving a HONDA. Wait a minute, I drive a Honda!
