1992 300CE SPORTLINE 24V - ASSIST
I recently sold my 88 300E and need to replace it. I have located a 92 300CE Sportline 24v with 120K, color black/black, no rust runs good need regular cosmetic work such as detailing, wood replacement front bumper cracked and wheels look like crap. I'm told it consumes some oil, I have read that the valve guide are an issue in these early 24v's. I was surprised when I opend the hood and saw the 24v I thought they came in the 93 annd newer.
I would appreciate assistance in what other concerns I should have and also from what I can see apart from the fender badges and shifter knob the Sportline seems to be suspension oriented it looks lower than my 300E did. again any comments/suggestions very welcomed. price in the area of $4k. I got a crazy amount for my 300E, $10K, it wasn't for sale but the guy kept bugging me and showed up with cash. Look at the pictures in my album it was perfect and everything worked no winters. |

It is basically an M103 engine with a DOHC head. It uses the same ignition system as M103 engines, CIS-E, not the HFM that later M104's use. I don't think it has variable valve timing, either. It is still a great engine, though. |
i would look for a better example.
we picked up a mint 300ce... 88k miles... sportline suspension upgrades, it was 7k.. but i am telling you, mint. |

John, have a PPI done by a MB-trained tech who knows that vintage MB automobile. Well known weaknesses on that vintage car are head gaskets and poor headlights. We own a 1992 300CE and it's still as tight as when it was new. The 104 engine in the 1992 revs higher at highway speeds than the newer 104 engines, and is not as responsive. Our 1995 E320 is much quicker and lower revving at highway speeds ... a more refined car. Having said that, the 300CE should have more power and handle better than your 300E. Carefully consider whether a 2-door coupe is going to suit your needs as well as a 4-door sedan.
