Help! used carb cleaner and now car does not start - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

'90 SL300. We took out the ICV and cleaned it with carb cleaner. Put it back in and pluged back the wires to it. Also spray carb cleaner down the throttle body (while the engine was off). Now the card does not start.

Spark plugs are dry. Fuel makes it to the distributor. I opened one of the hoses on top of the fuel dist that goes to one of the cylinder, tcranked the engine but no fuel comes out of it. Isn't the fuel supposed to squirt out of it when cranking?

I connected a spark plug to the end of one of the coils and cranked the engine. No spark! I checked the voltage at the coil, it has battery voltage.
What else can I check. Any help will be appriciated.

Is the throttle plate stuck?

Check to see if there is any fuel at the bottom of the intake manifold

I can see the throttle plate opening when we press on the gas pedal. I do see fuel in the bottom of intake manifold.

sounds like you got fuel delievery and ignition. If you are getting no spark then check the ezl unit and yes fuel should be getting to all cylinders so I think a fuel pressue test is in store. Also check the CPS.

The thing is that the car was running OK before we cleaned the ICV and throttle body. If a small piece of tissue paper, smaller than finger nail, fell in the throttle body, will it clog anything?
The fuel gushes out of input line and fuel regulator when tested.

Tissue paper should be fine. Plug has to be grounded in order to spark. A little starting fluid $1.00 a can might help get it started.. sounds like you fouled some plugs though. They may be dry but are they pretty black looking and old?

Make sure the ICV is completely dry. You could have shorted it out using the carb cleaner. Was it sticking?

should be sprayed with open end pointing down so you don't wash crud into the valve body. Let it drain for a couple of minutes. Use air if you have it then one quick shot of WD40 and reinstall.

I've done this on my 560SL right after I got it. Worked well.

I left an important thing out since I did not think it would be related to no starting (duh).
My friend installed a new iginition lock unit, we put the old tumbler on. As he was doing this I was busy with cleaning the engine TB and ICV. Once this was done, when we cranked the engine it would not start. Is it possible that the new ignition must be installed with a new tumbler?

Check the wiring he might have broken a brittle wire in a plug

Did the tumbler come with a new switch? Not all 129 swiches were created equal. Make sure you have the correct parts for the tumbler/ignition switch swap.

So even though the engine cranks, it could still be the wrong switch?
The tumbler is from the old switch. We removed it and put it on the new switch.

You may need to count the number of pins on the old and new switches. Be sure you have the same amount.
