How Do You Tighten Sepentine Belt - 190E
I replace the serpentine belt on our 4 cylinder 190E and now I cannot get the new one tight. Is there a bolt that I must first loosen?
There is the "little chimney" on the driver's front side of the engine that loosens and tightens with a 13 mm wrench but it has no effect on the belt's tension. I suspect that this chimney bolt is supposed to tighten the belt and that another "unknown to me" nut must first be loosened. Can anyone point me in the right direction? What is the procedure for tightening the belt?

I don't recall this engine(M102) specifically; but usually you would need to loosen the tensioner securing/pivot bolt first, then use the adjuster to loosen or tighten the belt, and lastly retighten the securing/pivot bolt to lock things in place. It can happen that simply turning the adjuster without loosening the other bolt will damage parts of the tensioner apparatus unfortunately.

Yes, loosen the big bolt first.

Wow slk that picture is a godsend. I did try to loosen that bolt using a 3/8 drive ratchet but it was too tight so I figured that it was not meant to be messed with.
I'll put a 1/2" breaker bar on it and hope that I don't pull the front of the engine off. I'm nominating you "Hero of the Day".

Try a 19mm instead of imperial or AMF

Could you translate that sentence into English?

The bolt is a 19mm metric. Use a metric socket.

Yes... the 19 mm bolt size is most important. If I had known the size of the bolt that needed to be loosened, I would have avoided a lot of grief because there is only one 19 mm bolt... the others in the vicinity are mostly 13 mm.
