79 450slc tranny downshift noise?

79 450slc tranny downshift noise?

When slowing down and just before coming to a complete stop the transmission makes one final downshift and at this time a clunking or clicking noise is very evident? The noise comes from the center of the car about or near the rear axle! It feels/sounds like something is loose or like there is play where there shouldn't be? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Gary
