w124 e420 stalls backfires

Hi All,
I have a 1995 E420, every since the fan clutch shredded my rad and had them changed I have encountered a wierd problem.
Probably coincidental.
at first t would start normally, then run for about 10 mins then run rough and stall. then it won't start for another hour or so.
Then recently its giving me a hard time to start, very rough start, then it does the same thing and stalls after a while.
Then today I thought I would check the spark plugs, it had chamion ones, , they looked pretty bad, and there was alot of gunk insife the wire casing for the spark plug, so i cleaned them as much as i could.
So I took it for a drive and it stalled a few kms down the road, and wouldnt start even after a couple of hours, whhen ever I crank it, it backfires like crazy and the exhaust pops loud, but no start.
Seems to me like there is unburnt fuel in the system, b/c when I first started it ( very roughly) you could smell the fuel out of the exhaut, it smoked alot. and if you try to press on the gas the car almost chokes.

any ideas?

Did you put the wires back on in order? even two wires put on wrong will cause that.

I checked that, but I am sure its not the problem b/c I am having the same problem I had before. I went back to it last night and it started right away.
Seems like it is flooding with gas.

Does this engine have the coils or the distributors?

Some things that come to mind are:

crank position sensor
plugs (i hope you replaced those crappy champions)
wires (if disributor)
coils (if coil engine)
air and vacuum lines on engine
wiring harness

good luck.

What shape is the engine harness and ETA harness in? Have you had codes pulled?

Have you tried cleaning the MAF?

Last night I went back to it, and it started right away, I left it on for about an hour and it stayed on.
Seems like when you give it gas it chokes and wants to turn off, then floods.
The asr light comes on randomly only when u first start, if it doesnt come on when u start it doesnt come on after

but why would it start back up a couple of hours later, and its not a coincidence, it always does that.
It is flooding for some reason.
I also changed the fuel pump relay.

because your ETA is freaking out, the fuel has a chance to evaporate. Also, as the car warms up different maps get utilized, as the car is running the vibration makes wires touch... Could be a multitude of reasons and given that ALL 92-95 cars suffer from wiring issues I ALWAYS look @ those items first when Strange things start happening.

Not doing so can have you spending TIME and $$$$$$ chasing ghosts.

At Least go in and verify that your engine harness and ETA harness are not breaking down...it won't even cost you anything!

Hi

It looks like a Crank Shaft Positioning Sensor to me, I had v similar problem, put one in and was fixed $58 at advanced auto parts (my car 2001 e320)

When cold will drive perfect, when hot will die.

Hopefully this is the one you need

Time for new distributor caps, rotors and sparkplugs.

Exact symptons on my 94 E420. Solved with tune up.
