Changed fan clutch - Now loud roar!!

I just replaced my fan clutch today along with the bearing bracket. i also removed the smog pump as it was going bad ........

Now i have this loud roar especially when i hit the gas hard....is this my new fan clutch? how can i check to see if it is a defective unit ?

thanks,

I don't have an opinion about the roar (sorry), but I am curious, isn't your belt about a foot too long now without the air pump?

If your old fan clutch was inoperable or slipping(?), you might not have heard the fan roar before. With the engine warmed up, you should hear it roar up until about 2000rpms or so, at which time it's supposed to release.

thanks for responses.

I shortened the belt to compensate for the smog pump......

I have had this car since august, and i did not drive it for a month while i changed the head-gasket.....honestly, this is the first time i hear the roar on my test drive this evening....my original fan clutch was never changed by the previous owner (183,000miles)...so maybe i am hearing what i was supposed to hear with a functioning fan? but it is quite loud when you are really hitting the gas!!

how to test it? i basically want to make sure nothing is wrong with the new one before the time to return it goes by ....

you say it is supposed to release? I think it gets progressively louder with rpm (when under heavy acceleration)

by the way, the correct belt length for the non-smog pump setup is 93 inches for my 2.8 m104 engine....the original length was 95 ......this is for the people looking at doing this....

thanks,

If it spins fairly freely with the engine off and engine cold, it is probably fine.

It should engage when first started, until the fluid is re-distributed.

When the engine is warm (above 195F I believe) the fan should engage and "roar" as you rev the engine, and it will up to redline unless it cools enough to disengage.

It will engage less at higher RPM, it is designed to limit the RPM of the fan, not disengage at high RPM.

this fan clutch seems to be engaged all the time...the car sounds much louder all the time...something is not right! i removed it and installed the old one again to check for differences in behavior ....

I might be taking a shot in the dark and/or sounding stupid, but please check it is not spinning in the wrong direction. I say this because my friend had some work done on his fan on his car where the mechanic managed to install it backwards somehow. It made the fan spin very loudly until it was corrected
