What is the correct PS fluid?

Hey all,

Can somebody please let me know the proper power steering fluid for a 97 S600? I thinks I have seen 3 or 4 different types listed for this car, some synthetic some non-sysnthetic. Can I add synthetic if I have non-synthetic?

Thanks,

To be safe I'd just go to the dealer and get a bottle. The P/S reservoir only holds 1/4 quart or less, so cost isn't really a big part of it.

Have you flushed out the steering or replaced the filter lately? Always good to do that.

Here is a link to it.

The answer is NO, mixing will contaminate the system, and generally damages parts.

Thanks, didn't know power steering had a filter? What's the best way to flush it out? Thanks

Thanks whunter for your reply, very good info but I don't suppose this procedure applies to a 97 V12, right?

I assume you have an S600 (Coupe), chassis: W140.076, Years:1994-1997, Engine: M120

Answer:

No.
Yours has a screen/filter inside the power steering pump tank, and is not a regular maintenence item.

Filter, power steering
MB# 000 466 19 04
$110.00

tank seal ring
MB# 022 997 19 48
$1.40

NOTE – All prices on special order parts subject to change without notice.

Mine is sedan (140.057 I think) with M120. So I'm guessing I shouldn't worry about flushing/filter for PS. Thanks.
