Performance module

My son was looking on ebay at $10 performance module that says it will improve the gas mileage by 15 mpg and give the car ('92 300CE) another 45 horsepower. This module is supposed to send a "new message" to the ECU and has a guarantee not to affect or ruin any other aspects of the engine. I don't know what to tell him but it sounds like a scam to me.

Any thoughts? Can this be real?

I think you should buy two of them. That would give a 30MPG improvement, which would cause the gas tank to overflow. You could then use the overflow gas in the lawn mower.

Sorry to be a wiseA$$, but these kind of scams just set me off. If such a thing actually did what it claimed, don't you think that it would be worth a little more than $10? It would probably be worth at least $15.

If there was a way to accomplish whatever this is supposed to accomplish, I feel QUITE confident that the engineers in that tall building in Stuttgart would have figured it out YEARS ago.

Agreed.

If it were to claim 2mpg and 12hp it'd at least be a little believeable, ...

It took Mercedes a second cam with variable timing, 12 more valves, MAS system with variable ignition timing, taller gears, and much more to accomplish less.

It's BS.

They're ALL BS. All of them. The Vornado, magnets, browns gas, "modules", all of them.

In all likelyhood your 'module' is a resisitor you place in line with the intake air temp sensor to trick the engine into thinking the charge air is colder, thereby enriching the mixture. This is what they usually are - a $0.02 resistor.

The MOST effective device out there that can improve your gas milage is your right foot. Simply changing your driving habits can increase your milage by as much as 10%.

Unless stated otherwise, any question I ask is about my greymarket 1985 380SEL.
