You can keep the scout and triumph, and substitute that with something Italian, then we line up perfectly.

My backup for the Bonne is the Ducati GT1000. Does that work better for you?

Here they are, side-by-side.

Misunderstanding with indy

When he quoted me the price for everything including a new exhaust, I assumed he meant both mufflers. Unfortunately, he only replaced the rear muffler, which was needed, but didn't eliminate the problem. Much better, but still ricey sounding. He cut me some what of a break on the bill which satisfied me enough, but it will take more than expected to make things right. (big shocker, right:rolleyes:) Its so close to turn key now that not spending a few hundred extra dollars would be stupid not to. He's only charging me half an hour of labor to install; its the mufflers that are so darned expensive. Considering its a rust free Southern car, it suprises me the extent of muffler degredation.

I yanked a rotten, water logged antenna from a junk car and gutted out the motor for manual movement. Its nice to have a free repair. :o I'll keep my eye out of a good one in the interim.

This slap in the face probably good for me anyway. I had been getting lazy with taking my cars to the indy so much. I was much more hands on with my last old gasser, the 6.9, and it was much more rewarding. Plus I'm at my limit on car sales for the year without a dealer's liscense, so I have to live off part time wages and savings to keep the fleet going. I like Ingrid so much that the E500 may be on the chopping block first.

I'm not surprised that you would take the W126 over that E500 wagon!! My 300SEL was by far my favorite MB owned to date. The engine is just so smooth!

Obviously the E500 is smoother, but to have some much money tied up in a car that could blow up at any moment is kind of scary. I don't feel like I have to worry too much about a 300SEL.

Considering that when you turn the key on a 300SEL, one computer box, one relay box, a few sensors, igniton module, etc....come on and make the car run......vs. the E500 booting up a network between everything from the headlights to the window switches and 50 kabillion sensors and miles of wiring......I'd have to agree the 300SEL is likely to have less go wrong.

The E500 is like the Space Shuttle.....if one sensor malfunctions you just have to say "oh well, can't drive it today, I'll let the repair team get on it and try another day" :D :D

It depends on how it was driven. If only a few miles, then that was just enough to get condensation build up in the muffler before the engine was cut off leaving it to eat the muffler from the inside out.

When I had my 92 Saab 900 convertible, my drive to work was less then a mile each way. I used to go through mufflers at a rate of one per year. My fuel mileage was also quite horrible.

Congrats, Tyler. I accidently stumbled onto this thread.

enormous size of 'ingrid' makes 'ol' turbo' look like the runabout in comparison

When I had a real short commute I took the car on longer drives at least once a week to prevent such things.....

I guess it makes sense considering the low mileage. The PO didn't even put 10k on it in nearly 3 years of ownership.

Right....If you're used to turbo lag, an M103 is for you. If the W126 cars had stick shifts, there would be no reason to own another car.

I get 20 mpg if I drive it like a 240D taking an onramp. I get 20 mpg if I granny the thing. I get 20 mpg if I drive at 70 - 75 mph highway cruising. And, I get 20 mpg in stop and go city driving.

It's always the same, same, same. No matter how you cut it. I'm not complaining.

Just drive them like diesels. Run WOT whenever you can. They'll love you for it. :)

I have to clean out my M103 on a regular basis because my wife just loafs around town in it always....short trips at like 25-35mph.....I open it up when I drive it. :D 5k+!! :D

Ever driven a CIS M104? :D:D

The feel is amazing! It would be one of the perfect swaps for an M103 W126. About 40+ more HP and that big' ole S-class would be flying. (M103 has 177hp stock vs. 217 on M104)
