2000 C280 W202 Brake Pad Change
 
Just changed the front and rear pads on my 2000 C280. Rear pads were original to the car, so got a good 75,000 miles out of them. There was 25,000 on the fronts before the warning light came on.

For the rears, knock the pin in halfway and remove the retaining spring. Don't knock the pin out completely first or the spring will go flying. Gently pry back the pads and remove. Be sure to monitor brake fluid level whenever you pry back pads. Dislodge any caked on brake dust. Apply MB paste to the new pads and slip in. No sensors here. Position spring, compress and slide in the pin and hammer home.

For the fronts, gently remove two lines from the plastic clips. I spray them with protectant to help ease them off their clips. Remove sensor from inboard pad. Locate guide bolts on the inside of the caliper. They are protected by a rubber boot and plastic cap. Completely loosen guide bolts, 7mm allen, they won't be on tight. You can do this first or after you pry back the pads. Note the coverage of the u-shaped pattern of the caliper on the outboard pad. Gently pry back pads enough so you can lift off the caliper. Inboard pad is attached to the piston and outboard pad is left next to the rotor. I had a wire hanger ready but there is good support around for the caliper. Before removing pad attached to the piston, use a disc pad spreader against the old pad and push it all the way back. A Lisle disc spreader works perfectly. Pull off the inboard pad. Note where the piston hits the back of the pad and butter up your new pad with paste and clip in. The outboard pad is just sitting there, remove, scrape off any caked on brake dust where it sits, apply paste to new pad and slide in. Replace caliper. Grease the tip of the sensor with brake paste, tap in, attach plug. Torque guide bolts, 18ft-lbs/ 25Nm, and replace caps. Clip the two lines and you are done. In hindsight, maybe the procedure is to loosen one guide bolt and remove the other and swing the caliper up to remove the pads. This would make it even easier.
