Center console lights ALL dead on 1988 300CE

Hi,
I'm posting this question for one of my neighbors who has a 1988 300CE (I think it's an 88, it's a W124 body, real nice car). The lights on his center console all died at the same time. This includes, the window switch lights, climate control lights, lighting for the stereo, lighting for the sunroof (and the rest of that upper panel). Anyone have any ideas as to why these would all die at the same time? Is this somewhat common? We've determined that it isn't a fuse, but we're not sure what else it could be. Thanks so much for the help.

Alex

Check the fuses. Even if the fuse looks fine you should replace it

Use the search mode...

Somebody just had the same problem recently. There is a fuse behind the instrument cluster. It looks like a light bulb but, it is red.
The good news i that it is not expensive, the bad news is the instrument cluster has to come out.

Ok, I will go ahead and replace a lot of the fuses in the fuse box just for piece of mind. As for the fuse behind the console, is it the console with the climate, stereo, etc. (the vertical console)? or is it under the trans. panel (with the window switches etc.)

Thanks so much

Alex

Just a dump question but you don't accidentally bumped the rheostat (the dimmer thing) all the way down do you?

Red face NOT the console, the instrument cluster!

Behind your speedo and tachometer. Check the dimmer switch, like it was suggested above, before you do anything else.

Ok ok instrument cluster. Sorry, I read all of that before in somewhat of a haste. I'm pretty sure it's not the dimmer switch because the owner says that the lights that illuminate the gauges works just fine. I guess we'll have to remove the instrument cluster and have a look. Thanks

On my 300SD all the lights went out at once too, however on my 83 300SD there is one main lightbulb in the back of the center console behind the acc unit that has a TON of fiber optic lines run off of it. This one light provides the lighting for my gear shift selector, my a/c vent lighting, and all the switches above the acc unit. My acc unit has seperate lighting as do my window switches. I beleive all, if not most window switches have internal lighting so a fuse may very well be your problem.
hope this helps,
Ryan

This is all great info. Driving home tonight all instrument lights went out, radio, gear selector, etc. very similar to that originally described herein.

All fuses fine, all other systems work, all switches still function and light up when they should. Coincidentally, I had just figured out where the dimmer switch was last night, so I'm guessing adjusting that didn't agree with either the fuse behind the cluster or the light source. Going in for breaks Friday, I'll see what they discover.

Thanks
