89 300E Crank sensor help

Hey guys on a 1989 mercedes 300E, 3.0L inline 6 where is the crank sensor front or back, also how do you test it to see if it is working right and if somebody has the right specs that would be awesome. Thanks

The crank sensor is in the rear on the bellhousing. It's right above the starter and has a 5mm allen bolt holding it in.

Here's the main diagnostic test for that L5 sensor (see FSM section 15-1250 for complete description). Engine cold. Ignition off. Unplug the L5 sensor at the EZL. Multimeter set to Ohms. Positive probe on inside of pin. Negative probe on outer part of pin. Spec is 680 -1200 Ohms. If no, rplc L5 sensor.

Driver's side on top of fender well, the CPS connects to the upper left position.
My CPS measures 851 ohms cold, and 924 ohms hot.

Looks something like this:

Use an ohmmeter to test the resistance; sb about 1000 ohms (if I remember correctly) plus or minus 150 ohms.

It's a magnetic sensor w/ no electronic parts. They're pretty reliable and usually don't fail unless the unit is mechanically damaged.

One last point; If it was "bad", the car wouldn't run!

True, but if they were beginning to fail, one would have hard hot starts or starting in general. Usually the crank sensor is the last to be checked though.

My car had a crank sensor that still measured within spec....but was causing problems. If its original it is probably a good idea to replace it.
