Looked at a 1986 500SEL Euro Today

Wow was it a basket case. 200k, 3 flat tires, hail damage, poorly redone interior that's already deteriorating. All electrical seem to work, and the car will crank all day long but won't fire. The fuel pump makes noise, and sends fuel to the distributor with enough force, but somethings not happening. It has the fancy euro computer, heated orthopedic front seats, and heated rears. Euro lights, bumpers, warning triangle, and trailer hitch. He's owned it for 10+ years, and drove it up until a year ago, when he had to leave out of state for a long period. It had a pristine body and was garaged all that time up until 4 months ago, when it was towed to his son's house to play with, and a big hail storm ruined the car.

He was asking $1000 for it, but insisted I make an offer despite the fact that I have little desire to own a parts car. I shot him something less than half his asking price, only because I want the euro lights and can pull a few key things over a weekend afternoon then scrap it. He wanted to sleep on it, so we'll see.

If you get it as a parts car I'll buy the cluster!!

If it was running fine a year ago then it is probably something fairly simple to fix that is keeping it from running. Perhaps a clogged fuel distributor, bad coil, bad EZL.....etc....it would just take some troubleshooting. What a cool car though.

Just know you'll need a little more than just the cluster to make that thing work.

Yes I know. I'd do whatever it took to make it work.

Well, he called and accepted my offer, but I'm not sure if I want to deal with it.

What are some of the more valuable euro bits and what are they worth? I'll probably sell the euro lights and keep mine stock.

Are you sure the interior was redone and that isn't MB Tex. Looks like the MB tex inserts.

Need MORE PICTURES! and some under the hood of the manifolds. Need VIN to run through the Russian site.
Pull the bumpers, Gen II Euro Bumpers are really hard to find. Not sure if rear bumper is Euro from pictures and looks to be Gen I if Euro??? Pull the wiper motors and arms. Check the Exhaust Manifold to see if they are logs or Tri-Y's if tri Y's they are worth a mint. Also if tri-Y's they will appear as two part Manifolds on both sides
Please get the engine number off the DS Torque converter housing. Look for the numbers 117.968 XXXXX
If the tail lights are Euro(orange ends). Check the left rear tail light wiring and see if the fake brake light(nearest to license plate bracket.) has the wiring for the rear fog light in that position. Likely the light switch is still Euro with a light bulb in it that lights for the rear fog when pulled out two notches. and of course the Euro Light switch bezel with the vacuum roller.

Wish I didn't live in CALI(Gen II's won't pass smog) FORNIA! I'd be willing to buy it from you.
Second Gen Euro's have a devil of a time passing smog in CA.

Too bad I saw this too late to change flights I could have come back from NC through Wichita.......to look at it with you and maybe get it running. Did you try to see if it had spark?

That cluster is worth $$$. For the $400 or so he is asking its probably worth parting out and junking.

The cluster is only worth $$$ IF you get all the corresponding bits and pieces of the trip computer(dash unit and the console unit in between the window switches at rear of console in picture) and the wiring looms......Too much trouble to add to a non Computer equipped car. Computer is in German also.

Wish Gen II Euro's were easier to Smog here in SO CAL I'd be interested in trying to rescue it. Warts and all.
