New chain tensioner M103?
 

I've installed a new cam chain tensioner and it seemed to have a lot of spring tension...?

What's the procedure for the new tensioners?....will it self adjust?

Assuming you put it together correctly, do you mean that it was really hard to push in the spring as you tried to tighten the threaded cover?

The inner plunger has a c-clip on it that clicks past grooves in the outer housing. This allows it to move inward, but not move back out again. Just be sure to install the inner plunger last, after you have installed the outer sleeve; then insert the spring and tighten the cap.
Yes, the spring and cap are a real bear to install; and there is a lot of pressure on the spring; feels like 50 pounds when you are trying to hold it down and turn the cap. Make a tool of some sort out of a bolt, so you can stick the bolt head in the tensioner cap and wedge it against something while you turn it.

Yeah, it was very hard to compress the spring and start the threads. The piston is held in with a threaded collar (17mm allen) then the spring and cap....

Just seemed like more tension than should be on a chain..and rail.

If that's the case it all sounds very normal. Even on my 200K+ tensioner the cap is hard to put on with the spring's resistance. I thought the same thing first time I put mine back in. I even took it out and counted the total detents it could go thinking that with that pressure it surely must be going all the way in. But after wrestling with the cap and getting it tight I only counted about 5 or 6 clicks if I remember correctly.
Remember to take it apart and lubricate it and reassemble it EVERY time you take it out.
