alternator pulley issues... 1979 300td
I have a 79 300td with an alternator that does not have the original pulley on it...
I bought the correct belt using the VIN -- and there was no way it would fit length wise...so I found one that fits, but can't get it to stop squealing now even after adjustment... I've noticed that the belt has sunk pretty far down into the alt. pulley....maybe the pulley itself is the problem?? I'm 99% sure it is the belt as I've used some belt spray conditioner on it and it did quiet it for a bit...now back to squealing... Any help/tips where I should go with it next?? Thanks... cheers |

To test for a pulley misalignment pour a little water on the pulley, if it quietens down for a minute or so and the squealing returns ,it indicates a misalignment of the pulleys . One is slightly skewed ,use a long ruler to check it.

Thanks -- I'll try that -- It must be misaligned -- I've tried adjusting that alternator many times and can't get it where it will stop squealing...and I think it's about too tight...
I still don't understand why the OEM belt won't fit though --- I guess the pulley on the alt. must be must smaller in diameter than the original?? thanks for your help, todd |
