outdoor temperature sensor replacment

Hello everyone,

My outdoor temp sensor on my 93' 190 has been on the fritz for a while, the display would read partial temperatures/incorrect temperatures until about a week ago.. Now it doensnt display anything, no degree symbol or F or anything.

I believe this might be due to the thermocouple senor being past its prime.

About a year ago, I had some work done on the lower core support and I don't believe they re-install the sensor in its proper place. I think it sat against the radiator a bit.

So after doing some research here I found that I can in fact replace the thermocouple at the end of the wire with another one:

Fenwal #192-302LET-A01 or Thermometrics #EC95F302W

These are fairly cheap and I will pick one up soon, however I am failing to see how I go about installing it. I know the current one has a large metal piece on the end...is that whole thing the thermocouple? or is the thermocouple inside the metal casing? If so how do i go about a getting to it?

If anyone can lend me a hand I'd appreciate it..

Thanks,

Kris

The display sender unit end can simply replaced by cutting of the old one and joining in the new one . Its basically a NTC resister in a metal body .i did mine by soldering in the wires to the old end .works very correctly for the past year .

I had simply cut off the old one and soldered in a new end bit. Its simply a NTC resister in a metal body .

On my 300CE-24 ...

I soldered an old sensor on down near the front bumper and it worked for a few years. Then that one failed.

I bought a new one from parts supplier in Berlin and that came with a long cable that went right back to the fuse box. I recall it was simply plug and play.

Further Question:

Occasionally the display will kick on and go all over the place with the temperature. I was on the freeway the other day and it turned on and displayed the temp to be -20F then +20F about a mile later, then it turned off. It is usually off, nothing on the display, completely blank.

Does this sound more like a bad sensor or bad display?

Sounds like the display unit. I have a spare, ... but alas it's in Michigan.

Yeah, it was coming on dim a bit today...

I have a display from a w126...but i dont think i can perform a transplant..
