1991 124 Roof moulding

I posted this question in the diesel section a week or so ago as thats where i usually am reading, however i got only one reply.I tried the suggestion that the roof moulding is held on by clips and to just pry it off,i tried a little to do that but really have not tried very hard as i am afraid i will damage the moulding. These are the two mouldings that start down near the bottom of the windsheild and run down both sides of the roof almost to the rear window
I need to repaint the roof as the clear has completely failed and it actually has rust in a couple of small areas on the sun roof. These mouldings have a rubber gasket under them and i really feel that i could do a much better job on the roof if i could get these off.I have looked at the Russian parts catalog but did not find any useful info there and since i am on dialup icannot get anywhere with the MB epc. any and all help will be greatly apreciated. Don:confused:

These trim parts are removed by prying them up from the clips that are in the channel of the roof and which are on the inside edge of the A-Pillar.

To do this without damaging the easily bendable (and never re-bendable back to the original shape) trim pieces, you start at the rear most point and with a nylon wedge. Get the point of the wedge under the trim and carefully apply upward pressure on the trim. The trim will pop up out of the spring clips which secure it.

When you get to the A-pillar area the trim also pulls straight away from its' clips only the clips are near the outside edge of the trim, where the clips on the roof are located near the center of the trim piece. There are about seven or eight clips on the roof and there are four clips located on the A-Pillar.

The procedure is 88.7-855/1,2,3 in the Service Manual Chassis & Body, Series 124 - Volume 2

The tool needed to do this is some sort of plastic wedge tool, they are about 8-10” long and made of nylon and usually cost about $20-30 on eBay. This tool is used for removing many of the trim parts and pieces especially on the 124 cars. Good Luck!

Thanks for the help! I went at it today feeling a little better about prying under those mouldings and they came off without a hitch i didnt have the plastic wedge so started with a thin putty knife, since i have to paint the roof i was not concerned about scratching it.:) Don
