Need to drill

Got a 97 e420.....ing switch is broken between column lock and key cylinder and it will not allow key to turn....I understand the screw that goes down between column and column lock has to be drilled out(has a nylon lock nut on lower side). Dealer want up to 5 hours to drill out....is there any trick or do u just drill straight up until column lock seperates.. Anybody out there thats done this and can add insight to this situation....Really don't have $500.00 extra dollars to spend
