Engine harness (1992 W124 M104)
 

While removing the cylinder head (open thread here http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/263982-92-300ce-m104-head-gasket.html), almost every connector on the upper engine wiring harness broke. The wires are somewhat pliable and the insulation seems ok, but the black tubing and connectors are very brittle. Any idea where to obtain a replacement harness and for about how much? Somewhere I read that they get upwards of $800 for this part. Is the Mercedes dealer really that proud of this part? What the...?!

If your car is a 1992, you are exempt from the bad wire sheathing issue.
The european environmental fiasco didnt start until 1993 as far as I know.

Im sure the harness would run you at least $1100 at the dealer, so your best bet is to replace all the plastic connectors.

Plastic connectors are cheap at the dealership. If the wiring is bad- it can be replaced with MIL-SPEC wire - get some of the fancy teflon insulated wire which is good for 250C.
The outer jacket which holds the wire together- get a piece of shrinkwrap. If there is the abrasion protection can be found also. Big thing is getting a high temp and teflon doesn't break down with exposure to oil/gas.

CIS cars did NOT have bio-deg wiring issues.

As noted you can purchase the plastic covers for any of the wiring ends.
