Removing main shaft on odometer?

Do the later model odometers have the ability to have the main shaft removed?

I wish to remove it so I don't have to get my broken one repaired as one I found at the junkyard works great, but it has 260k on it so I need to roll it back to 85k to match my 260E's actual mileage.

I tried pushing a thin screwdriver though and it doesn't seem to budge even with a good hit as well.

Anybody removed one?

I did one with a press and a piece of small tubing to push the rod into. You also need a dummy rod to go in there while the pin is out or you will have a lot of parts in your hand and it is difficult to reassemble. Cut dummy rod the length of the numbers so they can be removed without falling apart.

If you are going to take it that far apart just spin the numbers to whatever you want and reassemble the original.
Good Luck

Some might tell you that this is illegal (sick bird)

Its not really illegal at all on most any of our cars that have a mechanical odo. Because any car over 10 years old or 100k in most states is "mileage exempt" anyways at sale time.

Most MB's that are 10 years old or less have digital odo's by now.....hard to believe that a 10 year old MB right now is a '99!!

I tried tapping it through using a screwdriver, but it just doesn't seem to want to budge. I don't know if I really need to whack it, or if the shaft cannot be removed.

I don't want to spend $150-$200 to get something as superfluous as an odo fixed...
