What are DIN part numbers?

There are certain Mercedes part numbers that are referred to as DIN numbers. I think they usually begin with three zeros and are often used for small parts such as screws and fasteners. Can anyone provide a detailed explanation of what DIN part numbers are?

Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V. (DIN; in English, the German Institute for Standardization) is the German national organization for standardization and is that country's ISO member body.
