Valve job for a 88 300E

Hello,

I am new to this forum and I like to ask a question. My 88 300E is due for a valve job. I bought the car with 134K miles three years ago and now it is burning a lot of oil. The speedo stop working at 145K and I am sure I have driven the car around 40K.

Can anyone please tell me how much it should cost approximately? I am not going to MB dealer, but I have a friend who's brother in law is a certified MB mechanic and actually works for the local MB dealer. My friend told me, that his brother in law wants to do some work after hours for extra money (expecting new baby), so I am thinking to let him do it.

I like to know if possible what would be fair.

Thank you
Herk

I would rather him give you the price. He should know what is a fair price in that area.

In our area, it can rage from $1,500 up to $2,000 for this job.

Of course you should get a big break as the both of you will be avoiding most of the costs of running a real business.

Included in that is the extra risk you will be taking that the car will work afterward and into the future. You of course have no recourse if he fails in your eyes. No insurance against consequential damage. No guarantee against not getting your car completed in satisfactory time interval. His real job will have to come first as that relationship pays his mortgage and everything else.
