Can 4matic be driven w/o front drivehsaft?
 

The front driveshaft on my 92 4matic has to be removed to gain access to the transmission modulator for replacement. I need to know if I can test drive my car w/o the front driveshaft w/o causing harm to anything?

Hmm. didn't Saab do three-matic in the 60s? Or was that BMW with the AWD version of the Isetta.

OK, If it doesn't leak fluid and you don't get dirt into it, you can probably get away with it at low speed.

I guess I need to take another look at how the drive shaft comes out. The last time I looked at it I thought it could be removed without exposing any internals. Also, I thought I had read in another forum where a person had a bad transfercase and was looking for a way to keep driving the car and it was suggested to him to just remove the driveshaft. I havent been able to find that thread now, and thats why I asked.
I'll try not to vent about my feelings about this car, but in short I am frankly sick of it's problems and if the modulator does not fix the current problem, I am getting rid of it, beautiful or not.

I think its a big no-no to allow the transfer case to function without fluid like that. I remember a mechanic doing it as a diagnostic process on a Denali, and fried the transfer case.

I'm sure someone on this forum will take the car off your hands, but I suggest more patience. Once the issues are sorted out it will probably be the best car you've ever owned.
