Mercedes Benz Lovers near Detroit, Michigan

I'd love to meet up with other lovers of Mercedes Benz in the Metro Detroit area. Are there any known local Mercedes "Clubs" in my area where we can gather to share/care/love/cry/pet/hug/polish together (I won't mention any further details than those)???

Are there any other "crazies" like me in the Metro Detroit area? I live in Plymouth.

HI, Kelly.

I am in Big Rapids, MI.

Here are the MBCA regions - section in the Great Lakes area:

Great Lakes Region
Central Ohio
International Stars
Northern Michigan
Northwest Ohio
Pittsburgh
Three Rivers
Western Michigan
Western Reserve

Have you heard of Select Motors in Plymouth? They have a 87 300SDL for sale.

Select Motors

Yes! I know the owner; Jeff Verilone, very well. I almost bought a 560SL from him but it had a tick in the engine and he recommended to just replace it. Personally, I'd much rather buy an SL from someone that appreciated what they had! All of the chrome on the car was excessively scratched up, too.

Did you know that Jeff has a web site:
www.selectmotors.com

He has a very nice looking 560SEC that I was also considering but he made the mistake of taking me to see it while it was still in the BODY SHOP. It had some surface rust that he was having removed. Jeff also had the shop repaint the bumpers too! It looks nice but I've also witnessed paint chip off of repainted plastic bumpers.

I've been considering selling my 89 300SE for something a bit more spirited (hence my interest in the SL/SEC)

Kelley:

Did you just get that 300Se a while ago? I remember a few private chats on that car with you.

If you do run by Select motors, I would appreciate if you could give a visual look of that 87 300SDL. That should be a slow selling car, especially with the price they are asking.

Thanks.

You and I spoke about my 300SD not the 300SE. I currently own both.

I am a member of the Central Ohio MB club and would be interested in a Detroit area get together....its about 3 hour drive for me......
by the way is $8995.00 a high price for a clean 1987 SDL?.......especially in the condition that one look in?

I have been watching that one for a while (remotely) so that means it is at his lot for a while. The price has also dropped $1k since I first saw it.

I do not know if the price is really high as it depends on the condition. I just do not want to go for a 3 hr (one way) trip and return disappointed.

Jeff Verilone is very highly respected in our community and sells only the cleanest cars. (especially Mercedes!). I visit with him once in a while and he knows me personally.

He started buying ONLY Mercedes one at a time as a part time hobby and it just started to "Snow Ball" for him...what a lucky guy!!!

Shouldn't we ALL be working at a job or business that's also our "hobby"!!!

He had an 87 560SL (you might recall; Silver Blue w/Navy Leather) about a month or two ago that I was seriously thinking about buying and he admitted that it would be best to replace the engine.

Eventually selling at $7,995 (give or take) was a good price IF you wanted to put more money into it to bring it back to the level it's deserving of. It was very evident to me that the previous owner didn't respect the car or understand and love what he/she had.

I ended up finding a lovely 89 300SE in Garnet w/Palomino Leather in Ortonville. I felt a bit guilty about not buying from Jeff, as I told him I wanted a "Jeff Verilone" Mercedes, but he thinks that the best color for these cars are either Black or Grey. Neither color suits me!

If you're interested in Jeff's 300SDL, I could take some pictures. I considered that one too and it IS very nice.

...let me know. I'll be as impartial as I can.

Where do I go to find/join a local club? How did you find your group? I'd very much enjoy getting together with others to talk and learn from "The Masters". I have a few minor issues with my car and I'd really enjoy discussing/sharing them.

I've noticed that Mercedes followers are very passionate about these cars and I feel I am too. Owning two now, I STILL love to see them going down the road.

I don't see too many other drivers enjoying themselves though. It's like they're just driving "a car" to and from work.

It's just.......dare I say.........."basic transportation" ....it's sacrilege even saying those words!!!

I actually got my information from the MB dealer that I patronize here in town,Crown Mercedes.....but I do believe the club has a website that directs you to different chapters in your area.....check out.......

in regards to selling prices I seriously belive that its worth paying a premium sometimes for a vehicle that has been meticulously maintained....especially if you are buying a 140 chasisi car

Maybe we can form a mercedesshop group with a section in Michigan.

I see another one in the Ann Arbor area very active here as well.

To Kelly:
No need to take pictures, but if posible, do a walk around to see if there are dents or dings. See if the interior, engine bay, etc are in clean and good order. How about the mechanicals or maintainance. No hurry as the earliest time I can look is between mid-Dec and early Jan. Maybe we can plan some get together there.;)

To turnne1:
Is the 87 300SDL a long body 126 chassis car? The mileage has reached a point that many things might need replacing.

MBCA

I just joined for one year. Thanks for the info. Nice website.

The 300SD"L" IS a long wheelbase.

turnne1 11-20-2001 09:19 AM

I think in 86-87 S class cars were only available in long wheelbase versions....I think it was 1988 when they returned with a shortwheelbase car......and that availability continued with the 140 chasis......as all the diesel 140's are shortwheelbase and there were 300SE(S320) and 400SE'a also in the early 90's

by the way count me in on Michigan get together...well as long as the weather permits
