450SL Camshaft
While changing chain guides on my 1979 450SL I decided to change the oil tube as well but the clip which holds the tube to the front cam bearing broke and a small piece went down into the cam bearing and wedged. I have tried picking at it and vacuuming it with a small pump but the piece is wedged pretty solid. Unless anyone has a suggestion on how I might get the piece out I am guessing that the cam bearing will have to come off. The chain and cam sprocket collar etc are off so is it possible to back off the cambolts sufficient to slide the front cam bearing off without actually removing the entire camshaft.

If there is an electronics shop near you, they most likely sell a wide assortment of tweezers. I have a pair that are small and long enough to get down there.
Some of the old heads probably have some ideas. Can't wait to hear them. I suspect that the material is not harmful, but the reduced oil passage size could be. Whenever I do the top end inspection (ever 30k) I replace those phenalic pieces on the tube ends and ones in between. The original ones were very brittle and did break. The later ones didn't. Good luck.

450SL camshaft
Well I decided that I had better try to lift the camshaft and take the number 1 cam bearing tower out. I backed off all the bolts and the camshaft was lifted by the valve springs just far enough for the tower to clear the alignment pins. On retrospect I probably could have left the tower on with the wee bit of plastic in there but anyway for what it's worth it is possible to do it without totally removing the cam.
