'96 C280 transmission leak

Gentlemen, I own a '96 C280 with 208,000 miles.
My mechanic tells me there is a transmission leak where the engine meets the trans.
I believe this could be a seal or such. Just my guess from previous MB's.
My questions are these: your best guess on leak and does the engine have to be pulled to do this job.
Thanks
Steve Dale

The engine does not absolutely have to be removed, but that is the recommended method (removal of trans & engine as a single unit).
